“Introducing KDE Plasma 6: The Latest and Greatest Release in the Wild”

The dust has finally settled now that the highly anticipated KDE Plasma 6 is out, making its debut on several distributions. But not without a few bumps in the road.

Fortunately, the release was a much smoother experience compared to KDE Plasma 4, which may bring back some memories for long-time users.

KDE neon users had some initial difficulties, as acknowledged by the developers in a recent news post. They have apologized for packaging issues in the “User Edition” and are working on resolving them as quickly as possible.

On the other hand, Arch Linux users can now access Plasma 6 through system updates. As a rolling release distribution, it’s not surprising that Arch was among the first to fully implement the latest Plasma release. However, some minor issues may arise while the update is being tested.

Speaking of updates, the first point release for Plasma 6 is also available, featuring bug fixes that are essential for a smoother experience.

Development for Plasma 6.1 is already in full swing, with new features being added as Nate Graham has been documenting in his recent blog posts. These include the addition of a new KWin effect, “Hide Cursor,” which automatically hides the cursor after a set period. Additionally, XWayland apps will now have the capability to eavesdrop on mouse buttons, and various UI improvements are in the works. For instance, the Cube effect will no longer have issues with fewer than three virtual desktops and will prompt users to add more if necessary. Another exciting feature coming to Plasma 6.1 is a “fake” session restore, which will reopen apps from the last logout until the Wayland protocol is finalized. This will ensure all apps relaunch properly upon login, and it even works on X11.
